Moments from now, a new beauty queen will be crowned as Miss Universe 2009. Dayana Mendoza, the reigning Miss Universe from Venezuela will relinquish her crown to 84 delegates vying for the title of being the most beautiful woman in the universe.

I really love her! I think she's one of the best Miss Universe titleholder ever. I remember last year as I witnessed her victory in Miss Venezuela pageant, I immediately said to myself: "Ok, game's over. This will be the next Miss Universe." And true enough, Dayana really shined during the pageant in Vietnam. She's fresh, elegant, charismatic and full of energy.

So, who's gonna take her place as the new Miss Universe? Hmmm... I got my own faves: Australia, Spain, Kosovo, Russia, France, Jamaica, Ethiopia, Italy, Guatemala, Czech Rep. I just hope it will not be some over-hyped beauties that look almost in their mid-thirties! hahaha. As for our own representative Bianca Manalo... of course I wish her all the best. Oh well, let's just find out and I hope she'll prove me wrong.

*sigh. Dayana Mendoza, I'll definitely miss her. She's one damn great Miss Universe!

MANILA, Philippines – Former President Corazon Cojuangco Aquino has passed away.

She was 76.

Her son Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III confirmed that she died of cardio-respiratory arrest at exactly 3:18 a.m. Saturday at the Makati Medical Center.

Mrs. Aquino has been diagnosed with colon cancer early in 2008 and has been confined at the Makati Medical Center for more than a month.

Mrs. Aquino, widow of Senator Benigno Aquino Jr., will be remembered as an icon of democracy, having led a military-backed popular revolt in 1986 that ousted a dictator who ruled the country for 20 years.

At about 5 a.m. outside the hospital, Noynoy read a statement announcing the death of his mother.

The statement read:

"Our mother peacefully passed away at 3:18 a.m., August 1, 2009, of cardio-respiratory arrest.

“She would have wanted to thank each and every one of you for all the prayers and your continued love and support. It was her wish for all of us to pray for one another and for our country.

“Hinihiling po ng aming pamilya ang kaunting panahon para makasama namin ang aming mahal na ina.

“Later today, we will be announcing further details of her wake para sa lahat ng ating mga minamahal na kababayan na nais magbigay ng respeto sa aming ina. Maraming salamat po.”

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo expressed her condolences to the family of the former President, Arroyo's press secretary said.

The President is set to declare a week of national mourning, said Press Secretary Cerge Remonde in a live phone patch from the US where he is accompanying Arroyo who is on official visit there.

Remonde said the President could cut short her trip but that they were going to discuss the matter when they get to New York, their next stop after Washington D.C. where she met President Barack Obama at the White House.

Arroyo is expected to be back in Manila on August 5.

Remonde also said that under the law, all presidents were entitled to a state funeral but added that this would be subject to the family's approval.

Popular TV host Boy Abunda, a close friend of the Aquino family, told reporters on Saturday that the Aquinos were praying the Sorrowful Mystery of the Rosary when Cory gave her "last deep breath.”

Abunda said all five children of Mrs. Aquino, and her close friends and relatives were at her bedside when the former leader passed away.

After that last breath, Abunda said, Mrs. Aquino's children quietly cried.

"Malungkot. Tahimik na nag-iiyakan. Tahimik, except for Kris who was very quiet," he said, referring to the youngest daughter of Mrs. Aquino.

"Kris was very quiet. She was displaying such courage pero noong dindadala palabas mga labi ni Tita Cory... because you have to remember that Kris was in the hospital, Kris was by the side of her mother since July 20 hanggang sa mga oras na yun. Hanggang ngayon si Kris ay nasa tabi ng kanyang ina," Abunda said.

He said a Mass, officiated by Fr. Catalino Arevalo, was held after Mrs. Aquino's death.

Abunda said Arevalo is a very close friend of the former leader and had been officiating a Mass for her at the hospital.

A family driver of the Aquinos was seen loading stuff into a white Toyota Hi-Ace van parked at the back entrance of the hospital. They say it's the longest this 21st century lasting around 6 minutes. That's why I took a break from work, went outside and had a snapshot of it. Unfortunately here in the Philippines, we didn't really experience the total darkness - as compared to what billions of people in India and China had witnessed. Anyway, I'm still thankful I was able to see such magnificent phenomenon. Good thing I have my mom's old x-ray film and my handy Cybershot to capture the moment. =)

To "tweet" or not to tweet...

I remember way back 2007 or early 2008, I got an invitation request from a friend to sign-up for a Twitter account. I was only a "Friendster-user" back then (eewww, jologs..hahaha). I'm really not into such social networking sites before, until I learned about Facebook & decided to make the big switch from FS to FB :)

But now, Twitter is really gaining popularity in the world-wide web. It now ranks 16th according to Alexa's Top 500 Global Sites (with Google, Yahoo, YouTube, Facebook, and Windows Live dominating the TOP 5). Twitter is sometimes called "the SMS of the Internet". I'm still quite unfamiliar with what Twitter can actually do. Believe it not, I just signed-up today for a Twitter account and just posted my very-first tweet! hahaha. I was just helping out my officemate with her Social Media Marketing tasks, and now I'm curious what's the buzz about this whole Twitter thingy. I found this video in YouTube that explains what Twitter is all about in layman's terms.

So, do I really have to "tweet"?

Ahh.. memories (*sigh). We used to sing this song every time a friend celebrates his/her birthday . And I must say that this is probably one of my favorite advertisements made for Goldilocks.

For more than 4 decades, Goldilocks has always been part of every Filipinos celebration of life. As a matter of fact, it’s now almost certain that whenever there’s a birthday party, there’s always a Goldilocks cake that guests will truly adore. A special occasion is made even better with a Goldilocks product around. Baby showers, christenings, graduation, fiestas, even hospital visits
– you name it, a Goldilocks cake roll, “mamon”, or “ensaymada” will be present for sure! And to tell you frankly, I even had a chance to attend a funeral where all of us guests had Goldilocks ensaymadas and juice in tetra packs for snacks. ( I never thought that attending funeral could be that enjoyable and rewarding! )

Goldilocks has been also my mom’s favorite “pasalubong” to us. I remember that ever since I was a kid, she used to bring home from work either a chocolate roll or Brazo de Mercedes practically every pay day. Boy, how I loooovvveee and anticipate pay days during those times!

So, what makes Goldilocks “the one” close to our hearts? I'm not going to talk about Mike’s Autobiography: The Goldilocks Edition here, coz that’ll be like a torture reading all the 20-plus years of significant events in my life with a Goldilocks product in it. Of course, all of us have our own unique share of memories and celebrations with it, but why do we love Goldilocks so much? Is it really just meant for special occasions alone?

Years ago, I used to work in our office along Chino Roces corner Herrera st. in Makati. It was my first time to work in that area. And every break time, my officemates and I go to only one place – and that’s Goldilocks just right across the street! Yipeee! My top favorite snacks were: Hamonado Ensaymada, Blueberry muffin, brownies, Sago’t Gulaman, and Mais con Yelo (yumyum!). Believe it or not, my Korean boss loves the sweet, chewy consistency of their Sago’t Gulaman so much that whenever his Korean friends or guests come to our office, he’d always ask someone to buy some for them. At times when I feel stressed or pressured from work, I’d simply head towards Goldilocks, buy me some cake slice and my favorite Mais con Yelo, and then I would feel happy and recharged. Goldilocks has been the source of my comfort food. I also remember the time when my taste bud was badly craving for some slice of choco mousse and mais con yelo. It was raining really hard that night and the whole stretch of Chino Roces was submerged in knee-level flood. But then, there's just no stopping me from getting that slice of choco mousse and mais con yelo. So I crossed the river, errr the flooded street, ordered my cake slice & refreshment, and viola! – a piece of heaven in the middle of a stormy, stormy night =). Weird as it seems, but I love my choco mouse and mais con yelo... rain or shine.

But now that I transferred office, it's kinda sad that there's no Goldilocks shop near our building. There's one along Ayala avenue, but that's quite a long walk from our office. How I miss those times that I'm just a few steps away from my "sweet paradise", specially the bonding moments that I had with my old friends. Now, every time I have my favorite Goldilocks snacks, it brings me back good old memories with my friends worth reminiscing.

I guess the reason why Goldilocks is the one dearest to us is because it always gives us that “special feeling” no matter what occasion or time of the year it is. It’s that feeling of comfort and satisfaction we get, along with memories to last that makes Goldilocks play a significant part in our lives. What's also amazing about them is that they didn't just stop on providing us premium cakes and pastries. Knowing how passionate Filipinos are when it comes to food, Goldilocks also crafted exceptional dishes out of something that for us seems pretty ordinary. Imagine, even our favorite Pinoy dishes like dinuguan, laing, pancit, etc. are available for us food lovers to enjoy. That’s why I say: " You’re the 1 Goldilocks, because you always turn the usual into something special".

How thoughtful, how Goldilocks.

Missing Mer-nel's bakeshop =)

Last week, my mom and I went home to our province in Calauan, Laguna. And as we approached the junction or Jollibee-UPLB intersection ( or "johnson" as what the elders in that area call it), my mom asked me to make a right-turn to UP Los Baños. At first, I thought that she just wanted to have a tour of UPLB and take some souvenir pictures there. Oh well, turns out that she just wants me to buy her a chocolate cake from Mer-nel's.

Mer-nel's Bakeshop has always been famous for its delicious chocolate cake. For years, they had that reputation of providing probably "the best" cake in town - delicious, yet affordable.

In case you got tired of that same-old buko pie as a "pasalubong", I highly recommend that you drop-by their bakeshop whenever you visit Los Baños, Laguna. I'm sure you'll love it!

Oh, did I mention that my mom's taste is hard-to-please... and that she's diabetic =)

First day of Feb

How fast time flies... today is the first day of February!

For some reason, February has always been synonymous to Loving and Leaving for me. Why loving? Obviously, weeks from now it'll be Valentine's Day - a day when lovers enjoy and "losers" (like me) feel like...well, losers. hahaha :D

Why leaving? I don't know why it became a trend for me that my resignation from work always fall on a February. The last time I resigned was Feb.15, 2007. And now, I'll be leaving my work in Libis,QC on the 10th to go back to Ayala in Makati.

Surely, I'll be missing all of my friends there... it really breaks my heart (that's why I don't wanna be too "emotionally" attached to them).

I don't wanna cry on a fabulous February... not again. waaahhhhhh =(

I was kinda expecting that most of her guests will be... you know... moms: working moms, single moms, cooking moms, breast-feeding moms - so at first I'm a bit hesitant to go for i might be out-of-place (and not to mention that i came in really late).
Well, turns out that perhaps they're pretty much busy on some stuff, so it was just me, eMz and {girl}forallstatus who came.

The gorgeous Avvy of Virtusio PR emailed me last week this news clipping from the Philippine Daily Inquirer about last year's SONY Expo. She also said she'll send me copies of the TV interviews that i had. Yeah right... "the" nose-bleed interview.. hahaha :D

Now that i have exposure in print and TV, I wonder what would be next?

Just got this from a friend, and i must admit that i'm not really into this kind of "chain-letter-ish" stuff... but I do believe that this is what our nation really needs - for us to be united in prayer.

Stupidest thing I've ever done (so far..)

After a long drive from our province, I was extremely excited to view and upload all the pictures that I took and show to the rest of the world my photography skills and the natural beauty of our province :
the majestic mountains, the rice fields, blue skies, tall coconut trees, grazing farm animals, etc.
So I plugged in my Sony Cyber-shot into my PC and checked all my "fierce" photos. But there were some "not-so-fierce" shots so i decided to delete them. A pop-up dialog box appeared saying: "This file is read-only blah blah blah.. Are you sure you want to delete it?" And there were 3 options: Yes, Yes to all, and Cancel. And so I clicked "Yes to All".

And just like that.. with that one stupid click, i accidentally deleted all of my pictures stored in the memory stick!!! SOOOOO STUPIDDDDD!!!! I haven't even copied a single image yet into my PC!
Grrrrr!!!! Ahhhhh!!! STUPPPIIIDDDD!!!!

Now i have to google "how restore deleted files in memory stick"

or better yet... "how not to be stupid next time"

As always, it's been our family's tradition to celebrate "3 Kings" in the province. This time, it was held in the very picturesque town of Pila, Laguna - since most of my relatives from my mom's side live within that area in Laguna.

I didn't have the chance to welcome 2009 with a blast. I was in bed feeling really sick , got clogged nose & headache every time i cough. Next morning, we went to our relatives in Pacita to have a New Year lunch (we're not in the mood to cook anything on that day, so we're thankful for the invite! haha).

Then came my most dreaded part: the videoke challenge! Damn, how can i compete with a family of singers & musicians... i'm just a dancer - not a singer! haha :D

Anyway, i enjoyed it. I'm really proud of my cousins who can render those songs better than the original. That little girl on red shirt - watch out Charice Pempengco! She can put Celine Dion to shame..hahaha :D

Now im thinking, maybe it's about time for me to look for a voice coach - to unleash my singing talent and be "the star" of our family reunions..hahaha :D Great! now i have something to write down on my new year's resolution list...

I think, even without all these things - there's always a reason for us to feel happy and celebrate the true spirit Christmas...

Christmas is more than just a song, more than just gifts...

It's all about LOVE. A celebration of God's love for us - that He sent us His only begotten son.
Jesus is the reason why we celebrate CHRISTmas...

It is the birth of our Lord and Savior - and having Him in our lives makes our Christmas complete.

Wow, 3 days to go and it's Christmas time in the city! :)

I'm excited!! Even though I wasn't able to attend any Christmas parties this year due to health reasons (been really, really sick these past few days), still the spirit of Christmas remains.

And i just can't stop singing this Christmas carol almost anytime, anywhere! (sobrang LSS na LSS ba?? ) Hoping that one day, I'll be able to experience this kind of season with my family.. So, come and sing with me:

A Day at the Sony Expo 2008

They say life’s full of surprises...
Oh well, guess I have to agree with that now!

Spending my 6th of December,2008 in a place surrounded by the latest and the coolest gadgets that today’s technology has to offer; meeting fellow-bloggers and having a great time with them is such a remarkable experience – like a fantasy that's too good to be true. Here’s the story of my “fierce” Sony Experience at the Sony Expo 2008:

Before coming to the event, I’ve got all the reasons to make me feel like one big “loser-of-the-day”:

my friends can’t come to the expo with me, nor anyone from my family (even if I said that it'll be my treat!)

checked my dresser; lo and behold - i got nothing to wear, all were in the laundry!!! (thank God, my red shirt still smelled perfectly fine!)

got stuck in an agonizing traffic at SLEX

And the biggest loser moments of all - I forgot to bring my freaking Sony VIP pass!!! What the heck??!! So I wasted no time at all – I ran to the nearest internet café (Thank you Lord for Netopia!), opened my Gmail, and printed my precious VIP pass (wheww!). After wasting Php 16.00 for printing something that I already printed at home, I headed my way to the SMX Convention Center for the Sony Expo 2008.

“You’re such a loser, Mike” – that is what’s going on my mind as I sign up at the registration area for the shortlisted 50 bloggers. And then I thought, "hey… why would I feel like a loser when I can enjoy myself once I get my first-hand experience on all those exciting Sony gadgets that are on display; and make new friends with those I’ve never met before". Luckily enough, I met some gorgeous and genuinely nice people like Roanna (the one who emailed me the “good news” from Nuffnang) and took a souvenir picture with her without any hesitations.

Then, as I headed for the intricately set-up VIP tables, I had the chance to befriend some of the VIPs like Kim (such a sweet gal), Ms. Lena (whose entry was chosen later on as one of the top3 commendable posts), Dondie (of sycamore - db.blogspot.com), and M erie (Kim's modelesque friend who arrived uber-late).

After feasting on the sumptuous meal, taking some pictures, and asking Casey from the Cyber-shot booth for a favor to recharge my battery – the event officially started. Kim and I actually missed its earlier part, as we were extremely busy hunting for the “magical Sony stamp” in every booth to avail those fantastic Sony freebies! After completing that challenging, yet rewarding booth-hunting, we were then able to focus on the entire program.

I like the portion when each of the Sony staff showcased their booth assignments and introduced its new products and latest innovations. What caught my attention was when the lady featured one of Sony's 8 World Breakthroughs: Sony’s TG1 handycam – the world’s First Smallest, Lightest and Slimmest Full HD Camcorder!

I was literally mesmerized by this beauty! What a sight to behold:

the simple controls,
elegant titanium body design,
lightweight & compact size,
and of course – full High Definition video recording capability!

I said to myself that after the program, I definitely have to see it in person and feel it with my own hands – and that’s exactly what I did. After the program, I rushed to the World Breakthroughs booth to have a glimpse of that Sony handycam. Wow, it fit perfectly on my little hands! We’re like lovers meant for each other! And because of its solid titanium body, you can now say good-bye to those nasty fingerprints left behind! Awesome! If there’s one thing that will replace my old Sony Handycam, this must be it – nothing more, nothing less. (if stealing wasn't in the 10 Commandments, I could have stolen and put in my goodies-bag at least 6 units of this beauty - one for each member of our family! hahaha. Really! :D

Another segment of the Sony Expo program that I really, really loved was the “fashion show” of the trendiest, “fiercest” laptops you’ll ever find – the colorful Sony VAIO. Parading in pure white, luxurious pink, blazing red and glossy jet black; the models were able to convince me that undeniably, having a Sony VAIO with you will certainly bring out the best in you. I was also thrilled to see Deiter (a schoolmate of mine from U.P. Los Baños), enticing the audience with his black VAIO. I just can’t imagine how good-looking I would be, carrying one of those notebooks while going to the office. Man, I don’t even care if it’s in pink or red – as long as it’s a VAIO, I would still look fierce and fabulous! (now I really, really have to pray to God for that Sony VAIO, promise I'll be a good boy now...hehehe :)

Finally, my most favorite part of the Sony Expo 2008, the announcement of the winners of the “My First Sony Experience” contest came. At first, they showed on the screens the top 10 entries, then awarded the top 3 commendable posts. And the biggest shock of all: they accidentally flashed already on the 2 big screens the winning entry! My initial reaction was in denial, but my tablemates insisted that in fact, I’ve won the contest! It was then that I started to panic and got nervous – I didn’t see it coming! I wasn’t prepared nor at my best. I even forgot to splash some cologne and put some powder on my shining-shimmering face before coming up the stage!

Oh well, at least the crowd loved it – catching a glimpse and taking pictures of Beauty and the Beast live onstage! Being up close with Ms. KC Concepcion while she handed me my new Sony Cyber-shot T700, and taking souvenir shots cheek-to-cheek with her – ahhh... what a sweet blessing from above!

My day at the Sony Expo 2008 has been a day full of amazement, fun and excitement. Seeing and experiencing Sony’s top-of-the-line products, learning more about their 8 World breakthroughs, making new friends, meeting KC Concepcion in person for the first time, ambush interviews by TV networks (again for the first time), pictorials on my favorite SONY booths - all these are the experiences that are truly beyond compare.

It also made me realize 3 things about life:

(1) Never be discouraged by how you feel or by the things happening around, for you’ll never know what God has in store for you if you persevere in life; (so don't ever think or feel that you're such a loser, yaya :)

(2) People may come and go; at least be thankful that they’ve been part of your life, sharing good memories with them that remain.

(3) And lastly, Sony will always hold that special place in every consumer’s life as they continue on with their technological breakthrough and innovation that creates impact in our everyday lives.

I wouldn't be surprised if one day, Sony will release their very first Cyber-shot camera with “Pout-shutter technology”, in addition to their very popular Smile shutter. I hope they’re up for the challenge of providing us that perfect “pouted look” in every pictures we take that will truly be priceless! hahaha :D

Life indeed is full of surprises. And as long as there’s Sony, there will always be a reason for us to be excited; eager to look forward to the next level of high-quality lifestyle that only Sony can provide. Because having a Sony isn’t just about style, it’s about living a life like no other.

My First SONY Experience is with my father’s SONY Trinitron TV & Betamax

My father is such a "ginormous" SONY fanatic (and so am I). Ever since he started working abroad, he never fails to bring home with him some appliances and electronic gadgets, specially SONY products. Up to now, whenever I’m planning on buying something, he’ll remind me that if it’s not SONY, then forget about it baby. That’s how loyal he is to SONY products.

So my wonderful SONY experience started when I was a kid. My father brought with him back home his very first major purchase from Saudi, a 21-inch SONY TRINITRON TV, a SONY Betamax (together with its bundled SONY Rewinder), and a SONY stereo. That was his first 1“katas ng Saudi” as what 2 OFWs call it. I’m really blessed and thankful as I grew up and enjoyed watching all of my favorite cartoons and TV shows with those “katas ng Saudi” stuff. I remember how envious my playmates were whenever we watch Disney cartoons with our SONY Betamax. Their TV sets were in black-and-white back then. Thanks to SONY Trinitron, the best consumer CRT technology developed by SONY Corporation, we were able to enjoy and appreciate those Disney classics better in rich, full colors as compared to other television models during those times.

Modesty aside, I can vividly remember that at such an early age (I'm only in kindergarten back then) I already know how to operate our Betamax:

connecting the cables at the back of the TV
rewinding my favourite tapes using the rewinder
feeding it into the device
tuning the TV into channel 3 (which i dunno why)
pressing the little triangle button to play
and of course the Golden rule:
"Never, ever press the eject button (the triangle button with a horizontal line at the bottom) without pressing the little square button (stop) first!"

Oh well, I'm such a smart kid! (haha). At the age of 5, I learned how to be a "techie" and an independent kid, so in case that I’m all alone in the house, I won’t be bored and can watch all the Betamax tapes that I want - and we got tons of it! Really.

How can I forget Alice in Wonderland? If in high school, I watched Titanic like 5 times in the cinema memorizing all of Rose and Jack Dawson’s lines; this Disney classic, I watched it in our Betamax almost every noontime after school! I really loved its full-colored animation, the enchanting story, and the magic that lies within the Wonderland. I also remember myself crying and feeling sad everytime I'm watching “The Walrus, the Carpenter, and the Oysters”. Oh boy, those poor, innocent little oysters got eaten by that ugly, greedy walrus!

How can I forget all those heavenly Saturdays as I watch all of my favourite shows in Channels 13, 9, 7 & 2 non-stop!: Glo-friends, My Little Pony, Rainbow Brite, Care Bears, The Woody Woodpecker Show, Voltes V, Uncle Bob’s Lucky7 Club, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Thundercats, Visionaries, Voltron, He-Man, She-Ra, Transformers, Mask Rider Black, Maskman, Bioman, etc… And of course, that won’t be complete without memorizing and singing along with their theme songs (talk about being linguist at an early age singing all those Japanese songs!)

In November of 1992 our house accidentally caught on fire. It was a tough time for us as we have to start our lives from scratch all over again. Thank God for the provision and we were able to get back with our lives. And of course, there’s just no stopping us from having that SONY experience back again. Years had passed, my dad sent us a package from Kuwait. Guess what, a 27-inch SONY Trinitron WEGA! We were oh so thrilled, our first flat screen TV! Then soon after, he brought with him back home a SONY Handycam! Wow, now we can make our own DVD home movies that we can watch over and over again. It was such a milestone for us, now that every birthday party, family reunions, outings – all can now be recorded into DVD movies that we truly enjoy watching. Even the devastating typhoon “Milenyo” where we experienced for the first time extreme flood in our area - and my first time to drive from Makati City all the way to Quezon province, with typhoon “Frank” heading on his way to Mauban, Quezon were all captured in our SONY Handycam. ( I never imagined I'd be that good in storm-chasing! ) And just recently, we bought a SONY Cybershot W120 digicam, the one that comes with a free KC Concepcion CD, to add more spice in our SONY experience. My officemates really loved it, specially its “Smile Shutter Technology”. Now, everytime we have our lunch-outs, all we get are picture-perfect smiles that are truly priceless.

Every “first” in our lives must be cherished - like this very first blog of mine for my very first time to join an online promo (hahaha!). These are the things that will always hold a special place in our hearts, with memories to last. Our very first SONY Trinitron TV and Betamax will forever remind me of my wonderful childhood - how colorful it is, how cleverness and creativity was instilled in me, and of course, how blessed am I having a father who generously showered his love for me. It definitely gave significance in my life just like the Sony’s World's first Smallest, Lightest and Slimmest Full HD Camcorder: TG1 Handycam, which makes capturing every precious moments easier in real High Definition – because sometimes you don’t just have to watch it, you need to see it, feel it, and then relive it.
